"Burials in Old Cemetery Previous to 1900"
by Charles E. Pratt, circa 1900
Early in the 20th century local resident Charles E Pratt transcribed the two oldest sections of Oakwood Cemetery which are now known as OC1 and OC2. (See the cemetery map) He also included what is known as OC3, situation along the northern edge of OC1.
The original transcription record bears this note:
"No record kept of burials previous to 1900, this record taken from inscriptions on markers"
The result is record of existing gravestones in Sections OC1 and OC2 in at the time Pratt carried out his transcription project. Some of these have been lost or are no long readible. Please remember that burials were made in the "new" cemetery after it opened in 1865. That means that markers from the 1865 to 1900 found in sections A-I are NOT included in this list. In addition, after 1865 families could pay the sexton to move their family members and markers from the older sections to plots in the new sections. Markers that were moved were before 1900 did not appear in this list.
The following is taken as found from Pratt's record. As with the original record, they are organized by letter, but are not in complete alphabetical order within the letter. The list also includes the year (of death/burial), the Section ( I= OC1, II=OC2, III- OC3, northern section of OC1), and the lot number. We have added a comment column to the original record.
